Creating a Corpus Based Material

 Hello, my dear readers!💖

It’s been such a looong time since we last see each other.

I’ve missed you guys so much, have you missed me? 🥹🥹

I’m back with you guys with another interesting topic.

Today we are going to talk about creating a corpus based material!!!

This time in our Current Issues in Teaching course we were assigned to create a corpus based teaching material and a lesson plan based on the ASSURE modal . We were supposed to design a worksheet and our target group was EFL learners who are enrolled in a high school in Turkey. I worked on this task with my friends Nisa Elmas and Bilge Dilara Doğan. They also have blogs, so you can click here if you want to see Nisa's blog and here for Bilge's blog. For our worksheet we decided to choose the topic “Too and Enough”. We designed the worksheet with the aim of teaching the topic to the students inductively and we wanted them to get help from the corpus in the learning process. We created different types of activities. First one was testing their background knowledge. Then they were supposed to find out the various usages of “too and enough” using the corpus as a tool. Lastly, we wanted them to reinforce what they have learnt so far, so we designed different types of activities in which “too” and “enough” were mixed with each other.

While designing the worksheet we used Canva which was the best tool for our task with it’s lots of various designing options. To get corpus information , we decided to use COCA. Because we wanted the students to see the target words as a keyword in the context and their different usages. But, using COCA was a little challenging for me. I had a hard time finding the right information and section to write what I wanted at the beginning. Though it was a fun and engaging experience after learning how to use it. Since you need to know the symbols and sections meaning, students might have a hard time while using it as well but with our instructions we tried to minimize it. ☺️

You can click here to see our worksheet and here for the lesson plan.

That was all for today.

I hope you enjoy reading!

xoxo Yağmur 😊
